چکیده

The electron-proton instability in the IPNS-Upgrade RCS is investigated in this report. A dispersion relation applicable to the coasting beam is derived, and the approximations used are stated in order to facilitate the understanding of the underlying mechanism of the instability. The threshold of instability in terms of neutralization of the circulating beam is found for the ENS-Upgrade RCS. The dependence of threshold on the beam size and the lattice tune is also studied and its numerical results are presented.

Transverse Instability Analysis for the Ipns Upgrade

The proposed 1-MW spallation neutron source upgrade calls for a 2-GeV rapidly-cycling synchrotron (RCS) with an intensity of 1 . 0 4 ~ 1 0 ~ ~ protons per pulse [l]. The potential exists for the excitation of collective, intensity-dependent transverse instabilities. These can normally be controlled by introducing a betatron tune shift or spread, where care is exercised to avoid single-particle ...

The Ipns Rcs Rf System Third Cavity Upgrade*

The IPNS RCS is a rapid cycling synchrotron used to accelerate protons from 50 MeV to 450 MeV, 30 times per second. Currently, two single-gap, ferrite-loaded coaxial cavities, located 180o apart, provide a total peak accelerating voltage of approximately 21 kV over the 2.2 MHz to 5.1 MHz revolution frequency band. An amplifier chain, which includes a 2 kW predriver, a 20 kW driver and a 100 kW ...

Study of Field Ionization in the Charge Exchange Injection for the IPNS Upgrade

The proposed 1-MW neutron spallation source is a rapidcycling synchrotron (RCS) with a design intensity of 1:04 10 protons. A H beam from the linac is injected into the synchrotron via the charge exchange process. Due to the high intensity of the beam, the minimization of beam loss is one of the primary concerns. In this paper, we study a possible beam loss associated with ®eld ionization, whic...

A Real-time Energy Monitor System for the Ipns Linac*

Injected beam energy and energy spread are critical parameters affecting the performance of our rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS). A real-time energy monitoring system is being installed to examine the H beam out of the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) 50 MeV linac. The 200 MHz Alvarez linac serves as the injector for the 450 MeV IPNS RCS. The linac provides an 80 μs macropulse of approximate...

Diagnostic Investigation of Tune and Tune Shift in the IPNS RCS

The Intense Pulse Neutron Source (IPNS) Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) accelerates 50 MeV protons to 450 MeV 30 times per second for spallation neutron production. Average current from the RCS has recently exceeded 16 μA with peak instantaneous current approaching 15 A. The RCS makes efficient use of 21 kV of RF accelerating voltage and uses phase-modulation between the two rf cavities to damp...
